A passenger train going from Mysore to Darbhanga has collided with a stationary goods train in at Kavaraippettai railway station in Tiruvallur district, near Chennai. The parcel van of the express train caught fire and 19 passengers are reportedly injured. At least 12 coaches of the passenger train have also derailed.

A passenger train, travelling at 75 kmph, hit a stationary goods train on Friday, at Kavaraippettai railway station in Tiruvallur district, near Chennai, at around 8:30 pm. The train entered a loop line instead of the main line, following which at least 12 coaches derailed, leaving 19 passengers injured, railway officials said. A parcel van also caught fire.

Past midnight, stranded passengers were transported through MTC buses to Dr MGR Chennai Central railway station. Early in the morning, at 4:45 am, a special train departed from Dr MGR Chennai Central, taking the stranded passengers to their destination. Passengers were provided with food and water.

According to sources, the railway has ordered an inquiry into the Tamil Nadu train accident by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) and has also formed a committee to conduct the probe.

Four passengers of the Bhagmati superfast express suffered minor injuries in the accident.

Ambulances and doctors have reached the accident site. Most passengers have been rescued from the train. Arrangements are being to send passengers to their respective destinations through other means.
According to sources, the crew experienced a heavy jerk as the train entered a loop line and collided with the stationary goods train at 8:30 pm.
