AGRA: Kamal Kant, a Dalit man, took his own life after allegedly being thrashed and held hostage by two loan sharks, who are siblings, for his inability to pay back Rs 4,500. The incident was reported from Dakshini Mohalla in Firozabad. Cops have registered a case against the duo, who are on the run.
The death came to light Wednesday when videos surfaced showing Kamal being held hostage and beaten.On Thursday, cops filed a case against three individuals and launched a search for them.
Kamal, 26, was allegedly subjected to severe abuse, which led to his suicide on July 6. Kamal had lost his father five years ago and lived with mother Krishna Devi. He used to drive a loading vehicle for Pramod Singh, one of the accused.
Krishna Devi said, “Pramod was demanding Rs 60,000 from my son, but Kamal claimed he only owed Rs 4,500. When he failed to repay the amount, Pramod and his brother Manish began harassing him. They often came to our house to threaten my son.”
On July 6, Pramod called Kamal to his house, where he was taken hostage, tied up, and beaten throughout the night. The following day, they released him after forcing him to promise to repay the debt. In the video, Kamal can be heard pleading, “I will borrow money to pay you back,” only to be kicked on the head and further abused.
Distressed by the torture, Kamal hanged himself at night.
