The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has revealed shocking details from the Apalachee High School shooting, including how a 14-year-old shooter managed to sneak a gun into the premises that day.
Colt Gray, accused of fatally shooting two students and two teachers on September 4, has been charged with murder and will be tried as an adult. His father, Colin Gray, has also been arrested for allowing his son to carry the gun.Colin Gray faces four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of cruelty to children.
The bureau noted that this is the first time in Georgia history that a parent of a school shooting suspect has been charged in connection with the crime. Additionally, the bureau indicated that this is the second time in national history that a parent has been charged in connection with such an incident, according to a press statement.
According to the GBI, the assault-style weapon used by Colt could not be disassembled, but he managed to conceal it in his backpack. It was also noted that Apalachee High School does not employ metal detectors as a security measure.
“Colt Gray brought the gun into the school on his own. The assault-style rifle could not be broken down, but Gray hid it in his backpack,” said the GBI.
In response to questions about the panic alert system, the GBI explained that “Teachers wear badges equipped with panic alert buttons, which they can press to notify law enforcement of an incident. This system had been active for about a week before the tragedy at Apalachee High School, and several teachers did press the alert buttons.”
When asked how Colt Gray was able to leave the classroom, the GBI stated that Colt asked a teacher for permission to go to the front office and speak to someone. The teacher allowed him to leave with his belongings. Gray went to the restroom, hid from teachers, and later took out the rifle and began shooting.
