A 9-month-old child tragically passed away after being left in a car for nearly eight hours by the child’s grandmother in Beeville, Texas. The authorities are investigating the case as a heat-related death.
According to Beeville Police Department, the child was found unresponsive around 4 pm on Wednesday in the back seat of the grandmother’s car. The child had been in a car seat since 8:30 am that morning.Upon discovering the unresponsive baby, the grandmother called the police, said media reports.
The parents have been informed, though their location during the incident remains unclear.
Ongoing investigation
The Beeville Police Department is leading the investigation, with support from the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers. Authorities are also treating the case as a possible criminal homicide, though no official charges have been filed yet.
At least 25 children in the United States have died in hot cars in 2024, according to a report from Kids and Car Safety. Texas leads the nation in these fatalities, with 156 deaths reported from 1990 to 2023.
