WASHINGTON: Kamala Harris “was Indian all the way” before pivoting to embrace a black identity for political purposes, former President Donald Trump alleged on Wednesday in crude racially-loaded attacks, topping off a day of incendiary remarks at a public rally where he asked her to “get the hell out of here” because “she will destroy our country.”
Addressing the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) in Chicago at an event that became a trainwreck, Trump sought to sow doubts and discord on the Democratic side with blatantly false claims when a host journalist asked him if he thought Harris in on the presidential ticket only because she is a black woman.
Trump surprised the audience by suggesting she was not black.
“I’ve known her for a long time. Indirectly. Not directly, very much. And she was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black. And now she wants to be known as Black. So, I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?” Trump said, amid disbelieving laughter from the audience that evidently saw through his tactics.
Host journalist: She has always identified as a Black woman —
Trump: I respect either one, but she obviously doesn’t because she was Indian all the way. And then all of a sudden she made a turn and she became a Black person.
Kamala, biracial daughter of a Jamaican father and South Indian mother, has always embraced her dual heritage, while identifying herself primarily as black from a young age. She went to Howard University, a historically black college (HBCU) in Washington DC as a teenager while acknowledging her Indian roots from her maternal side and black roots from her father’s side, going to both India and Jamaica for vacations after her parents divorced when she was six.
Apparently, the dual identity is too hard to comprehend for Trump’s many racist followers. They bombarded social media with visuals of Kamala dressed in a sari with her grandparents, making dosas at a cooking show, and interviews in which she acknowledged her Indian heritage, to prove that she was “phony” and “opportunistic” in claiming her primary identity was black.
With several polls showing him unexpectedly trailing Kamala in the Presidential elections despite surviving an assassination attempt, Trump followed his remarks in Chicago with an even more inflammatory tirade at a public rally in Pennsylvania.
“She’s the worst ever. And she’s going to be your president? She will destroy our country. This November, the American people are going to compare these records and they’re going to tell Border Czar Harris, you have done a horrible job. You’re a disgrace to our country. You’re fired. Get out of here. You’re fired. Get the hell out of here,” Trump said.
While Trump was unloading on her in the battleground state where he came within inches of death, Harris was attending a black sorority meeting of Sigma Gamma Rho members in Houston, where she stayed above the fray by dismissing his comments as “the same old show” of divisiveness and disrespect and saying “the American people deserve better.”
Kamala herself is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, which, like Sigma Gamma Rho, is part of the “Divine Nine” council of historical Black fraternities and sororities which form the base of black political support for her.
Trump’s Chicago event with black journalists, which in itself divided the fraternity, started on an explosive note with the former President complaining from the get-go about “horrible” “rude” “nasty” “hostile” questions when he was asked about his frequent putdown of black people.
He claimed he was the best president for the black community and warned that Democrats allowing millions of illegal immigrants into America would result in them taking away “black jobs.”
Trump attending the black journalists’ event — and walking into a lion’s den, so to say — is part of an outreach that stems from his improving poll numbers among black voters when he was pitted against Joe Biden. But Harris, having replaced Biden on top of the Democratic ticket, appears to have galvanized her black base to reverse the trend, leading Trump to question her owning her black heritage.
