NEW DELHI: The Indian men’s hockey team secured a well-deserved victory over Ireland, ensuring their qualification for the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics. Despite a few defensive lapses, the team displayed their dominance and controlled the game, particularly in the first half.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh led from the front, scoring a brace in the 2-0 win against Ireland in a Pool B match.India’s consistent penetration into the opposition’s circle and their ability to dictate play in the first half were the highlights of their performance.
Given Ireland’s relatively weaker opposition compared to their previous opponents, India’s dominance was expected.
However, their performance in the second half was less convincing, although the win has propelled them to seven points from three matches, effectively eliminating Ireland from the quarterfinal race.
Belgium and Australia, both unbeaten, have six points each and their highly anticipated match later in the day will have a significant impact on the pool standings. India had previously managed to edge past New Zealand 3-2 and hold Argentina to a 1-1 draw, showcasing their resilience and determination.
The top four teams from each of the two pools will qualify for the quarterfinals. Argentina and New Zealand are vying for the fourth spot in Pool B, but after New Zealand’s 0-2 loss to Argentina, their chances of overtaking India on points have diminished.
Harmanpreet’s goals in the 13th and 19th minutes, one in each of the first two quarters, provided India with a comfortable lead. Despite both teams earning numerous penalty corners in the second half, the score remained unchanged.

Ireland’s profligacy in squandering 10 penalty corner opportunities was a significant factor in their defeat. India’s defence, however, also faced criticism for conceding an excessive number of penalty corners in the second half, an area that requires improvement.
The Indian team acknowledged their struggles in controlling the ball in the latter stages of the match, allowing Ireland to capitalize on their opportunities. However, they regained control in the final quarter, showcasing their resilience and ability to adapt to the changing dynamics of the game.
While India’s performance was not flawless, their victory over Ireland has secured their place in the quarterfinals. As they progress further in the tournament, the team will need to address their defensive lapses and maintain their composure throughout the match to overcome tougher opponents and achieve their ultimate goal.
