If Donald Trump’s running mate JD Vance is elected as the vice president, then his beard will make history as White House has not seen any man with facial hair in recent past. Donald Trump apparently does not like facial hair but JD Vance’s stubble does not irk him, it seems, as Trump complimented his running mate by saying that he looks like “young Abraham Lincoln”.
It is an issue of detailed research as to how beard gradually exited the White House but a 2015 study by Oklahoma State University threw up some interesting facts. People for the survey purpose were shown images of bearded candidates against similar-looking clean-shaven candidates and voters perceived bearded ones as more masculine but that was not necessarily a positive trait. About 52 per cent of men and 49 per cent of women said they would vote for the candidate with facial hair.
The survey said female voters are unlikely to go for bearded candidates.
JD Vance did not always sport a beard. He debuted with this new look in 2022 as he launched his Senate bid. Hence, this is being seen as a deliberate attempt to break the clean-shaven stereotype. If he is elected and he does not shave his beard, then both he and his beard will make new records.
As Vance’s beard has social media’s attention, many commented that the beard suits Vance well as without it, he has a very childish face.
Here are the beard records:

- The last president with any facial hair was William Howard Taft, elected in 1908.
- The last vice president with a mustache was Charles Curtis, who was Herbert Hoover’s veep.
- And the last major party candidate to try to break that clean-shaven streak was Thomas E. Dewey, who ran, unsuccessfully, for the highest office in 1944 and 1948.
