NEW DELHI: Gautam Gambhir, the newly appointed head coach of Team India, held his inaugural press conference alongside chief selector Ajit Agarkar, discussing his vision and recent strategic decisions for Indian cricket.
Gambhir emphasized prioritizing the progression of Indian cricket over his personal agenda, while Agarkar clarified leadership choices and player selections, such as appointing Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain and resting Ravindra Jadeja for the Sri Lanka series.
Gambhir underscored his commitment to Indian cricket, stressing the importance of the team’s success over personal gains. He acknowledged the accomplishments of his predecessor, Rahul Dravid, and highlighted his intent to continue the team’s legacy of achieving significant milestones.
As it happened: Gautam Gambhir’s press conference
“I am taking over a very, very successful team. T20 World champions, runners-up in the WTC and ODI World Cup. I have a fabulous relationship with Jay Shah and all these speculations about different things, we can do a better job by clarifying a few things than putting these things in the media. The betterment of Gautam Gambhir is not important; Indian cricket is,” Gambhir stated emphatically, setting the tone for his tenure.
Gambhir’s approach focuses on transparency and direct communication to address any speculation regarding his appointment and the team’s direction.

During the press conference, chief selector Ajit Agarkar provided insights into the recent selection decisions. He explained the rationale behind appointing Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain over Hardik Pandya, stressing the importance of having a captain who can consistently participate in all games.
“We want a captain who can play all of the games. His skillset is difficult to find. Fitness has been a challenge for him. It becomes difficult for a coach and a selector. We have time till the next T20 World Cup. Fitness is a clear challenge. We want someone who is likely to be available more often than not. Surya has the qualities needed to succeed as a captain,” Agarkar explained.

Agarkar addressed another major talking point—the exclusion of star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja from the Sri Lanka series. He clarified that Jadeja was rested, not dropped, pointing out the strategic reasons for this decision.
“Every player who misses out feels hard done by. Sometimes that’s how it goes; it’s difficult to fit everyone in the 15. It’s about making the most of the opportunities. Rinku missed out on the T20 World Cup because of no fault of his own. Pointless to take both Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja in the same short series. He wasn’t dropped. He is likely to feature in the Test series. He is still within the scheme of things and an important player,” Agarkar stated.
The remarks by Gambhir and Agarkar underscore a clear vision centered on strategic planning, transparency, and maintaining the high standards set by the team’s recent successes. Moving forward, the focus is on the collective objective of enhancing Indian cricket, addressing challenges with clear communication, and making informed decisions for the future.
