A 12-year-old girl from Humboldt, Tennessee, faces murder charges for allegedly smothering her 8-year-old cousin while she slept.
The incident, which occurred on July 15, was captured by a security camera in the bedroom the girls shared. According to a relative, the two had been quarrelling over an iPhone prior to the tragic event.
The video footage shows the older child using bedding to suffocate her younger cousin as she slept in the top bunk. After the younger girl’s death, “the juvenile cleaned up the victim and repositioned her body,” as said by Gibson district attorney Frederick Agee.
The 12-year-old, who will turn 13 later this month, has been charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence following the authorities’ review of the video on Wednesday.
Agee expressed his shock at the disturbing nature of the crime, saying, “I consider this to be one of the most disturbing violent acts committed by either an adult or juvenile that my office has prosecuted.”
Given the severity of the crime, Agee plans to petition a judge to try the girl in adult court. This would allow for a more substantial sentence, which could involve either incarceration or court-ordered supervision with specific conditions.
