NEW DELHI: Vice President Kamala Harris reached out to congratulate counterpart Republican Ohio Senator JD Vance on Monday after being selected as former President Donald Trump’s running mate for the upcoming presidential election.
According to a Biden-Harris campaign official, Harris expressed her congratulations to Vance in the message and conveyed her desire to meet him at the CBS News debate, as reported by The New York Post.
However, while the Biden campaign has agreed to participate in a vice presidential debate hosted by CBS News, the Trump campaign favours a debate organised by Fox News instead.
During the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Vance received unanimous support from the delegates, officially confirming his nomination as the GOP vice presidential candidate.
CNN reported that Harris welcomed Vance to the race and extended her congratulations on his selection.
If elected, Vance would become the second youngest vice president in the history of the United States.
“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator JD Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“JD honourably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate, where he was Editor of The Yale Law Journal and president of the Yale Law Veterans Association.
“JD’s book, ‘Hillbilly Elegy,’ became a Major Best Seller and Movie, as it championed the hardworking men and women of our Country,” the former president wrote.
“JD has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond,” his post added.
