NEW DELHI: Nato allies on Wednesday staged a 75th-anniversary summit in the US capital and said that they have started transferring F-16 jets to Ukraine and stepped up promises of eventual membership for Kyiv.
Nato allies called China a “decisive enabler” of Russia‘s war against Ukraine and expressed concerns over Beijing’s nuclear arsenal and its capabilities in space.
The sternly worded final communiqué, approved by the 32 Nato members at their summit in Washington, makes clear that China is becoming a focus of the military alliance. The European and North American members and their partners in the Indo-Pacific increasingly see shared security concerns coming from Russia and its Asian supporters, especially China.
In the communiqué, Nato member countries said China has become a war enabler through its “no-limits partnership” with Russia and its large-scale support for Russia’s defense industrial base.
“This increases the threat Russia poses to its neighbors and to Euro-Atlantic security. We call on the PRC, as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council with a particular responsibility to uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, to cease all material and political support to Russia’s war effort,” read the communiqué, which referred to China by the abbreviation of its official name, the People’s Republic of China.
“The PRC cannot enable the largest war in Europe in recent history without this negatively impacting its interests and reputation,” the document says.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Chinese mission to the European Union said the declaration of the Nato summit in Washington is full of “belligerent rhetoric”, and the China-related content has provocations, “lies, incitement and smears”.
The draft communique being developed at the Nato summit in Washington said that China has become a decisive enabler of Russia’s war effort in Ukraine and Beijing continues to pose systemic challenges to Europe and to security.
“As we all know, China is not the creator of the crisis in Ukraine,” said a spokesperson in a statement released on Thursday.
Additionally, China is staging army drills with Belarus this week at Nato’s eastern border, in a sign of escalating tensions between Beijing and the US-led defence alliance.
The joint “antiterrorist” exercises on Russian ally Belarus’s soil near the Polish border come as Nato leaders gather for a summit in Washington, with the war in nearby Ukraine high on their agenda.
With relations between Nato on the one hand and China and Russia on the other at a low ebb, analysts believe that Beijing wanted to send the alliance a warning message with the timing of the drills.
