NEW DELHI: The death toll in the twin encounters in Kulgam district climbed to eight on Sunday as security forces recovered the bodies of two more terrorists, officials reported.
The encounters, which began on Saturday in the villages of Modergam and Chinnigam, have seen intense fighting between security forces and militants.
Both encounters broke out following information about the presence of terrorists hiding in these two villages nearly 12 km apart from each other.
“Bodies of two terrorists were recovered from the Modergam encounter site, while four bodies of terrorists were recovered from the Chinnigam site,” officials said.
Tragically, two army jawans, including an elite Para Commando, lost their lives during the operations.
The anti-militancy operations were still ongoing at the time of the last reports, as security forces continued their efforts to neutralize any remaining threats and restore peace in the area.
Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a “spike” in the number of terrorist attacks in the past few months.
In June, three terrorists were neutralized in an encounter with security forces in the Gandoh, Bhaderwah sector of district Doda in Jammu and Kashmir, ADGP Anand Jain had said.
