NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has penned a letter to Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, urging for increased compensation and immediate assistance for the families of victims in the aftermath of the Hathras stampede, which claimed the lives of over 120 people.
In his letter, Rahul shared his recent visit to Aligarh and Hathras, where he met with the bereaved families.”Yesterday morning, I met with several families from Aligarh and Hathras districts and tried to share their pain. The tragedy is so profound that words fail me when attempting to console them,” he expressed.
Expressing shock over the Hathras stampede incident, which claimed over 120 lives, Rahul Gandhi wrote, “With a heavy heart, I write this letter to you, understanding the pain you must also be feeling.”

Highlighting the inadequacy of the compensation announced by the state government, Rahul stressed the need for an increase in relief measures. “The compensation announced by the Uttar Pradesh government is grossly insufficient. I urge you to increase the compensation amount and ensure its prompt distribution. Additionally, adequate treatment should be provided to the injured, along with appropriate compensation,” he emphasized.
The opposition leader also called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident, attributing it to negligence and insensitivity on the part of the local administration. “The families informed me that the incident occurred due to negligence and insensitivity of the local administration. A comprehensive and transparent investigation is necessary not only to prevent such tragedies in the future but also to restore faith in the justice system among the bereaved families,” he added.
