NEW DELHI: Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has sharply criticised Bangladesh’s batting performance after they lost four wickets for just three runs, eventually handing India a 7-wicket win and a 2-0 series sweep in the second Test in Kanpur.

The legendary Indian cricketer expressed disappointment, noting that the Bangladeshi batters seemed to forget they were playing a Test match, where patience and resilience are key.

“I thought that maybe they forgot this is a Test match. There are plenty of days, and this is, of course, the last day. Some of the shots that we saw… from Najmul Hossain Shanto — you’re right, when the shot comes off, it looks brilliant. When it doesn’t come off, you have to think, what have you tried to do?” Gavaskar said on air during the commentary.
He highlighted their poor shot selection and lack of composure, which led to the collapse. Gavaskar emphasized that Test cricket demands a different mindset compared to limited-overs formats, and the Bangladesh team’s approach showed a lack of understanding of the format’s requirements, ultimately putting them under immense pressure.
“Then Shadman after reaching his half-century, playing a loose shot outside the off stump, these are things where he could have capitalised and gone on to get a hundred,” Gavaskar further said.
India’s triumph was orchestrated by an unprecedented batting display on the fourth day, solidifying their dominance with an 18th consecutive home Test series victory, further extending their existing record.
Bangladesh crumbled before lunch on Tuesday, dismissed for a mere 146 runs, with Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja claiming three wickets each. This left India with a modest target of 95 runs to secure the win.
Yashasvi Jaiswal scored his second half-century of the match with a solid 51, as India confidently reached their target, clinching the victory in a contest marred by two-and-a-half days of rain interruptions.
India now hold an eight-point lead over Australia at the summit of the World Test Championship standings.
The foundation for India’s success was laid during a groundbreaking fourth day, where they achieved the fastest team scores of 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 in Test cricket history.
