Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a statement on Thursday, expressed his support for Kamala Harris in the upcoming US presidential election.
Putin who has commented on US politics multiple times often to mock, was referring to US President Joe Biden‘s recommendation that his supporters back Harris. “Here, we are going to do that too, we’re going to support her, he said during a question and answer session at Russia‘s Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, according to AFP.
Putin also talked about her Harris’ laugh and said, “She laughs so contagiously that it shows that everything is fine with her.”
Putin also mentioned former US President Donald Trump‘s imposition of numerous sanctions on Russia, expressing hope that if Harris performs well, she might refrain from such actions.
The Kremlin leader claimed to accept the choice of the US voters and said, “Ultimately, the choice is up to the American people, and we will respect that choice.”
Putin’s comments come just a day after the United States indicted two employees of the state-run Russian news network RT and imposed sanctions on its top editors, accusing them of attempting to influence the upcoming US ballot. In February, Putin had backed Biden over Trump, describing the current president as more “predictable.” The White House, in response, called on Putin to “stay out” of US elections.
Meanwhile, last year, he criticised the US political system, calling it “rotten” and asserting that Washington was in no position to lecture other countries about democracy.
