Oprah Winfrey, the talk show host, delivered a powerful endorsement of Kamala Harris on Thursday, while taking a pointed jab at Republican vice-presidential nominee JD Vance over his controversial “childless cat lady” comment.
Making her first-ever speech at a Democratic convention, Winfrey’s address resonated with the audience as she appealed to independent and undecided voters to support the Democrats. Her speech, which ranged from discussing school integration to critiquing derogatory labels, emphasized the importance of values, character, and decency in the upcoming 2024 election.
Winfrey, a registered independent, urged voters to consider what truly matters in leadership. “Values and character matter most of all. In leadership and in life. And more than anything, you know this is true, decency and respect are on the ballot in 2024,” she declared.
In a veiled reference to Vance’s previous comments, Winfrey remarked, “When a house is on fire, we don’t ask whose house it is. If the place happens to belong to a childless cat lady, well, we try to get that cat out too.” Her remark was met with applause, highlighting the growing backlash against Vance’s remarks.

Winfrey’s speech also paid tribute to the late Tessie Prevost Williams, one of the New Orleans Four who helped desegregate schools in the 1960s. She connected Williams’ legacy to Harris’s journey, noting that the progress made in civil rights has paved the way for Harris to potentially become the 47th president of the United States.
Reflecting on her decision to speak, Winfrey was quoted by CBS as saying, “There couldn’t have been a life like mine, a career like mine, a success like mine, without a country like America. Only in America could there be a me.”
Winfrey’s endorsement has been historically influential, with her previous support of Barack Obama in 2008 estimated to have contributed nearly a million votes. Her surprise appearance at the convention kept secret until the last moment, underscores the stakes of the 2024 election as Democrats rally to unite voters behind their candidates.
