US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris made their first joint appearance on Thursday afternoon in Maryland, marking their first public event since Biden ended his presidential bid and nominated Harris in his place.
The event celebrated key legislative achievements, especially the efforts to negotiate lower prescription drug prices. It also carried the symbolic weight of a Democratic leadership transition.
Biden highlighted his long-standing efforts to reduce prescription costs, solidifying his legacy in the process.

However, Harris took center stage by effectively communicating the practical effects of Biden’s healthcare policy, which has been challenging for the president to articulate. She energised the crowd, prompting them to chant, “Thank you, Joe.”

As soon as Harris finished speaking and Biden took the stage, the audience started to disperse from the arena.
Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race came amid growing concerns about his age, especially after his underwhelming performance in a debate with Donald Trump in June. Trump, meanwhile, is planning a return to the White House after his loss in 2020.
Kamala Harris secured the Democratic nomination for president, earning overwhelming support from 99% of the 4,567 delegates at the Democratic National Convention.
She is the first woman of color and the first Asian American to lead a major party ticket. Harris had announced Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. Walz, aged 60, was chosen from a list of potential candidates who had strong recognition and hailed from politically advantageous states.
Trump has announced Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate. If elected, Vance would become the second youngest vice president in American history.
