Vinesh Phogat, who made history on Tuesday by becoming the first woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final, faced an unfortunate turn of events.She was preparing for the Olympic Gold medal bout but missed the crucial weigh-in mark on the second day of competition.As per the reports, Vinesh is recuperating in the polyclinic of the Olympic Village and is reported to be stable and resting.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) issued a statement on Wednesday addressing the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat. Despite the team’s efforts throughout the night, Vinesh weighed in slightly over the 50kg limit on the morning of the competition. As a result of the disqualification, she will be placed last in the event.
“It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50 kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50 kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand,” the IOA statement read.
In response to the setback, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to IOA chief PT Usha to discuss the available options for India. He encouraged the IOA chief to explore all possible avenues to support Vinesh’s case and urged PT Usha to lodge a strong protest against the disqualification if it could benefit the wrestler.
