Former House of Representative speaker Nancy Pelosi on Sunday made an over the top demand of adding US President Joe Bidento Mount Rushmore. Pelosi praised Biden as a “consequential president of the United States” and suggested he deserves a place alongside the iconic figures already carved into the monument.
“You’ve got Teddy Roosevelt up there, and he’s wonderful,” Pelosi said during an interview on CBS News Sunday.
“I’m not saying take him down, but you could add Biden,” she added.
Pelosi’s remarks come days after Biden announced he would not seek re-election and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, following his recent challenging debate with Donald Trump on CNN.
There have been speculations that Pelosi played a role in Biden’s decision to opt out from the 2024 presidential race due to concerns about his chances against Trump.
Earlier, former President Donald Trump, had also hinted at his desire to be included on Mount Rushmore, saying, “Sounds like a good idea to me” when asked.
However, he denied reports that his administration had contacted Republican South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem about making it a reality.
Mount Rushmore, featuring the 60-foot-high faces of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, stands as a “shrine to democracy.”
Sculptor Gutzon Borglum selected these presidents for their pivotal roles in American history: Washington for founding the nation, Jefferson for westward expansion, Lincoln for preserving the union and ending slavery, and Roosevelt for promoting industrial innovation. The monument was carved into the granite rock face between 1927 and 1941.
