NEW DELHI: 21 Indian fishermen released from the Sri Lankan custody by the Indian High Commission in Colombo, reached Chennai airport on Saturday morning. The High Commission and the Consulate General in Jaffna, successfully negotiated the release of these 20 Indian fishermen on Thursday.
Earlier on a post on X, the official handle of the High Commission of India in Colombo said: “Returning home! 21 Indian fishermen have been successfully repatriated and are on their way to Chennai from Colombo.”
Representatives from the Indian Consulate General in Jaffna made a visit to the Kayts police station to check on the well-being of two fishermen, who were part of a group of four whose boat had capsized following a collision with a Sri Lankan naval vessel.
The Indian Consul General, Sai Murali, checked on the condition of fishermen Muthumuniyandu and Mookaiah, ensuring their safety and well-being.
The incident occurred when a Sri Lankan naval vessel collided with an Indian fishing boat, approximately 5 nautical miles north of Katchatheevu Island on Thursday. The fishing boat had four Indian fishermen on board at the time of the collision, one fisherman lost his life in the accident, while another remains missing and the two surviving fishermen were rescued and transported to Kankesanthurai.
The Consulate officials also facilitated phone calls to their families in India to ensure their welfare and provide updates on their situation.
The Ministry of External Affairs summoned the Sri Lankan Acting High Commissioner in New Delhi to express their strong objection regarding the incident that led to the death of an Indian fisherman. Search to locate the missing Indian fisherman is underway.
The Indian Consulate in Jaffna has directed its officials to promptly travel to Kankesanthurai and provide all necessary support to the affected fishermen and their families during this difficult time.
