JD Vance, the Ohio senator, who will be the running mate of former president Donald Trump in the November election, has been the man of the week for all wrong reasons. His derision towards ‘childless cat ladies’ — an opinion that he expressed a few years ago and now laughed it off as satire enraged several Americans as JD Vance thinks adults without children and adults with children are different. The latter has much investment in the future and so must have some extra right.
New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd in an opinion piece wrote that JD Vance is ‘purr-fectly dreadful’ and makes Trump look enlightened about women. True that Trump cheated on his first wife with the woman who became his second wife and then cheated on his third wife Melania Trump with a porn star but Trump “managed to choose a vice-presidenyt pick whose reviews on women are even more draconian and meanspirited than his own”.
‘Republican Party’s biggest wit’
Maureen sarcastically called JD Vance the Republican Party’s biggest wit as Vance addressed the controversy over his ‘childless cat ladies’ comment and said it was a sarcastic comment. “I’ve goyt nothing against cats,” Vance said in his ‘witty’ defence.
But Vance’s marriage with Usha a ‘modern one’
Maureen argued in her piece that Vance’ marriage with Indian-origin Usha, however, looks different where Usha has not been reduced to a breeder. A star of Yale Law School and a litigator at a top law firm, Usha clerked for r Chief Justice John Roberts at the Supreme Court and Brett Kavanaugh on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
“Their marriage is clearly a modern one. He donned an Indian robe for one of their wedding ceremonies, which irked white supremacists supportive of Trump,” Maureen wrote adding that a white supremacist once asked Trump whether he thought that a guy with an Indian wife and a kid named Vivek (Indian name) would support the white identity.
“Trump chose Vance to stir up cultural resentment in rural areas and small towns against elites and cosmopolitan types,” Maureen commented.
Will JD Vance be replaced?
Speculations are doing the rounds that in the wake of the very many controversies, Trump may replace Vance with Nikki Haley. Ex-adviser to former president Bill Clinton Paul Begala hinted at the possibility and said Nikki Haley is actively campaigning to join the ticket.
