Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, on Thursday invoked that annihilation of Iran in a social media post, reflecting his past fiery rhetoric while in office. This statement followed a recent increased security detail around Trump due to reported Iranian threats against him.
“If they do ‘assassinate President Trump,’ which is always a possibility, I hope that America obliterates Iran, wipes it off the face of the Earth – If that does not happen, American Leaders will be considered ‘gutless’ cowards!” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
He posted these remarks alongside a video of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussing alleged Iranian plots against Trump during a speech to the US Congress.
Reports last week indicated that the US Secret Service had upped security for Trump after learning of an Iranian assassination plot. This intelligence reportedly came from a “human source,” according to CNN. However, it was not connected to a recent shooting incident at a campaign rally.
The shooting in question occurred in Butler, Pennsylvania, where gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks fired shots, injuring Trump lightly and killing a rally attendee, according to various US outlets.
Tensions between the US and Iran have been longstanding and escalated following the 2020 killing of Qasem Soleimani, a commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, an action ordered by Trump during his presidency.
The US National Security Council has been “tracking Iranian threats against former Trump administration officials for years.”
Trump’s recent comments echo a 2019 incident where he threatened Iran with “obliteration” if it attacked American interests. This came after Iranian officials declared that diplomatic relations between the two countries were permanently severed due to new sanctions imposed by Trump.
As president, Trump also made explosive threats toward North Korea, promising “fire and fury like the world has never seen,” but later developed a notable rapport with its leader, Kim Jong Un, often referring to their “love.”
