Donald Trump labelled Vice President Kamala Harris as “vicious and dumb” during an interview with The Post on Monday, marking one of his first public statements since President Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race according to New York Post.
Trump, 78, criticised Harris the day after Biden officially exited the race and endorsed her as the Democratic party‘s top candidate for the 5 November .“There are two words to describe Kamala Harris: vicious and dumb. It’s a bad combination,” Trump said, underlining his disdain for the vice president.
At 59, Harris is now racing to consolidate Democratic support just days before the virtual vote expected to formalise her transition from Biden’s vice presidency to the party’s presidential nominee.
Harris, a former California senator and prosecutor, previously made headlines during the Democrats’ last presidential primary for her pointed criticisms of Biden. She notably confronted him over his past stance on interracial school busing, declaring during a 2019 debate, “There was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day. That little girl was me!”
This fierce critique led to tensions within the Biden camp, with First Lady Jill Biden reportedly fuming over Harris’s attack and expressing her frustration with the comment. Additionally, Harris had voiced support for women who accused Biden of inappropriate behaviour, saying, “I believe them, and I respect them being able to tell their story and having the courage to do it.”
Harris’s career has also been marked by controversy. As San Francisco district attorney, she oversaw 1,900 marijuana convictions, despite her admission in a 2019 interview that she had smoked cannabis in college while listening to Tupac and Snoop Dogg.
In response to Biden’s selection of Harris as his running mate in August 2020, Trump’s campaign released an ad branding her as a “phony.” More recently, Trump has derided her as “Laffin’ Kamala” and critiqued her for what he described as “word salads” of imprecise commentary.
Should Harris secure the Democratic nomination, Republicans are poised to scrutinise her tenure as Biden’s “border czar,” a role she assumed in March 2021 amid rising illegal immigration rates.
In reaction to Trump’s latest comments, Biden campaign spokesman Ammar Moussa provided a previously released statement, emphasising Harris’s commitment to justice and contrasting it with Trump’s alleged self-interest. “Vice President Kamala Harris has held criminals accountable her entire career — and Donald Trump will be no different,” the statement read. “Vice President Harris has dedicated her career to making life better for working people — while Trump only cares about himself. That’s the contrast the American people will see over the next 106 days.”
