As uncertainty looms over US President Joe Biden‘s political future, a recent poll conducted by the AP-NORC centre for public affairs research reveals that a significant portion of Democrats believe Vice President Kamala Harris would excel in the role of president if she were to assume the position.
The survey indicates that approximately 60% of Democrats have confidence in Harris’s ability to lead the nation effectively, while the remaining Democrats are either sceptical or lack sufficient knowledge to form an opinion, according to a report from CNN.
The poll comes amidst growing concerns among Democratic officials regarding Biden’s capability to carry out his presidential duties, particularly following his lacklustre performance in the June 27 debate.
Many within the party have openly suggested that Harris or another candidate might stand a better chance against the presumptive Republican nominee, former President Trump.
Recent polls, such as the Suffolk University/Boston Globe survey of Massachusetts residents, show that a majority of likely Democratic or Democratic-leaning voters prefer a candidate other than Biden to face Trump in the upcoming election.
Kamala Harris, the current vice president, has been the subject of numerous internal conversations regarding a potential backup plan for the Democratic ticket.
Despite this, Harris has consistently demonstrated unwavering public support for President Biden, shielding him from the criticisms and attacks launched by anxious party officials who have spoken to the media on the condition of anonymity.
