Former president Barack Obama and ex-speaker Nancy Pelosi are watching and waiting for President Joe Biden to reach a decision on whether to opt out of the presidential bid or not, CNN reported after Biden referred to Kamala Harris as Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky as President Putin — in his ‘big boy’ press conference last night; concluding Nato summit.
Reports said Obama and Pelosi have discussed the Democrats’ concerns over Biden’s re-election campaign and how much harder it has now become for Biden but they are not sure what do to.
“They are watching and waiting for President Biden to reach a decision on his own,” a longtime Democrat close to Obama, Pelosi and Biden told CNN.
What Nancy Pelosi officially said on Biden
Nancy Pelosi Wednesday said it was up to the president to decide if he should remain in the race. “We’re all encouraging him to make that decision because time is running short,” Pelosi said keeping it open-ended. She wants Biden to do whatever he decides to do, Nancy said acknowledging that Biden has been a great president.
What Obama said on Biden
Barack Obama has not made any statement reflecting that he wants Biden to opt out of the race. Rather, he took a different public stance as he defended Biden’s dismal debate performance. But it was reported that privately Obama thinks that Biden would lose the race to Donald Trump.
It has also been reported that Hollywood actor George Clooney who rallied a lot of support and fund behind the Democrats informed Obama that he was going to write a harsh piece on Biden in the New York Times. The opinion piece, published on Wednesday, urged Biden to step out of the race because, the actor wrote, no one could fight against time. Reports claimed Obama knew about the piece and neither encouraged nor discouraged George Clooney.
